The Future of Museums, Public Spaces and Parks with Sir David Adjaye

Named the world’s most influential architect by TIME magazine, Sir David Adjaye OBE is a leading voice on design and architecture’s role to influence change and create social solutions.  On October 16th, Adjaye will be speaking at the DIA  about the pressing social responsibility of those who design public spaces.  

Adjaye will be joined by Michael Van Valkenburgh, landscape architect of the Obama Presidential Centre and winner of the international design competition to transform Detroit’s West Riverfront Park. The conversation will be moderated by Jamie Bennett, Executive Director at ArtPlace America, New York, NY.

Public Workshop with the Three Finalist Design Teams

Join the Detroit Institute of Arts and Midtown Detroit, Inc. as they host the three finalist design teams--Agence Ter, Mikyoung Kim Design, and TEN x TEN -- for a public workshop at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History | Community Artist Gallery.

This will be an open house format in which each team will design a unique engagement station to solicit input and feedback from the public. The evening will begin with a short overview presentation to orient the audience for the goals of the evening. PLEASE NOTE: each team will be located in the same room.

Light refreshments will be served.

Student Design Summit Kick-Off

The DIA Student Design Summit is a call for ideas to make the area around the DIA museum more user-friendly, active and welcoming. How do people enter the museum? What is inside the museum? How do I get to other area attractions? Can the art come outside? What is a civic center / arts district in the 21st century? These are just a few of the questions that can be explored by your submission. 

Open to all students whom are currently enrolled in a Michigan high school, college, or university. Teams are strongly encouraged.

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) and Midtown Detroit, Inc. (MDI) are pleased to announce that eight finalists have been selected to move forward in the "DIA Plaza and Midtown Cultural Connections" design competition. 44 submissions representing over 10 countries and 22 cities from around the world were received. 

The eight finalists will make 90-minute public presentations in the DIA's Danto Lecture Hall on June 13 and 14.

To register for the June 13 and 14 public presentations, you will be redirected to our Eventbrite site HERE.

The registration deadline is Monday, June 11.
